Ecuador names Gallardo coach through 2030 World Cup

Ecuador has appointed Argentine coach Marcelo Gallardo as national-team head coach through the 2030 World Cup qualifying campaign. The 50-year-old replaces Sebastián Beccacece after Ecuador’s exit against Mexico in the 2026 World Cup knockout stage. Gallardo, River Plate’s most successful coach with 14 trophies including Copa Libertadores wins in 2015 and 2018, has never managed an international side. He also previously coached Nacional and Al-Ittihad and left his second River Plate stint in February 2026 following a poor run of form. Federation president Francisco Egas announced the hiring in a social-media video, saying the side sought Gallardo “for what he has won, but above all for what he represents. Welcome to Ecuador, Marcelo.” The Ecuador Football Association stated through its official channel: “We have talent, a system, and ambition. We are ready. Let the people believe. They have reason to believe. Welcome, Marcelo.” Contested: reports differ on the precise knockout round of the Mexico defeat, variously calling it the first knockout round, Round of 16, or round of 32; no other material disputes appear. Next, Gallardo’s first match is expected to be a friendly against South Korea on September 24.
