Ecuador Arrests Opposition Leader González Over Campaign Finance
Ecuadorian opposition leader Luisa González, who lost the 2023 and 2025 presidential elections to President Daniel Noboa, was arrested in a predawn operation in Manabí province. Prosecutors say she and six others are under investigation over alleged irregularities in financing and spending for her 2023 campaign; three people have been arrested in connection with alleged money laundering. González and allies, including party leader Gabriela Rivadeneira and former President Rafael Correa, reject the allegations and describe the case as political persecution, while González called for unity among progressive groups and accused Noboa’s government of authoritarianism.
