Egypt's Sisi pledges to step down by 2030
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi says he will leave office when his current term ends in 2030, insisting that changing the constitution to extend his rule is “completely settled” and will not be discussed. Constitutional amendments approved in 2019 extended presidential terms and allowed Sisi to serve through 2030; critics have argued the changes concentrated power, while rights groups have criticized his government’s crackdown on opposition. Sisi says the country will use the period before 2030 to prepare a new generation of leaders.
