El Paso Expands Truck Inspections After Fatal Crash
Following a fatal eight-vehicle crash on El Paso’s Transmountain Road, which authorities say was caused by a semitrailer’s brake failure, city officials began stepped-up commercial vehicle inspections on the route. Police say inspectors will check trucks for safety and compliance, while warning drivers to move over and expect possible delays. Mayor Renard Johnson is also working with city and state officials to find ways to limit heavy-truck traffic or identify safer routes, though local officials say restricting legal truck use of a state highway requires approval from transportation authorities. The crash killed one person and injured others; the investigation is ongoing.
