Elkhart Courthouse $37M Redevelopment Proposal Advances
Elkhart’s Redevelopment Commission unanimously accepted a proposal to redevelop the former county courthouse property, with the developers and city now negotiating a final agreement. The roughly $37 million plan calls for 124 apartments, six townhomes, 10,000 square feet of commercial space and a 300-space parking structure, while preserving portions of the former Elkhart High School façade. Mayor Rod Roberson says the project would add needed housing and extend downtown’s residential growth; a local business owner also welcomed the added event parking. Some residents and business owners raised concerns that the city should wait to pursue another redevelopment project until benefits from other projects become clearer. Construction could begin in late 2027, subject to a finalized agreement and city approval.
