Lena Dunham Welcomes Daughter Via Surrogate

Lena Dunham and her husband, musician Luis Felber, welcomed their first child, a daughter, via surrogate. Dunham announced the birth in a Vogue essay. Both are 40 and married in September 2021. Their daughter arrived 13 days after her due date; the baby's name and exact birth date were not disclosed. Dunham described the embryo transfer kneeling by an exam table, coffee with the surrogate in Cobble Hill, shopping for baby clothes, and waiting on a hospital bed for the birth. She told her newborn: "Hello... I'm your mama. You… you look nothing like I thought you would, but exactly right. We've been waiting for you, do you know that? It was so nice of you to come." She expected jealousy of the surrogate but felt relief her child would be "tucked into someone who radiated such safety." Dunham had a hysterectomy for endometriosis at 31; some outlets date it to 2018. She wrote it was a grief but also a relief and cited a 10-year average delay to diagnosis. In July 2025 she told The Times they were expanding their family.
