Billy Joel Awaits Medical Clearance to Perform
Billy Joel, 77, is recovering from normal pressure hydrocephalus, which has affected his balance and can also affect memory, vision and hearing; he currently cannot drive or perform. He says his health has improved after a procedure to implant a shunt, but doctors require further tests before deciding whether he can return to the stage. His neurologist has warned that concerts’ sound, lighting and physical demands could strain his condition, and Joel hopes to perform again if cleared. Joel is auctioning more than 70 motorcycles because his health makes riding unsafe; the auction is set to take place in New York, with proceeds intended to support the Joel Foundation.
