John Turturro Stars in New York Pickpocket Caper
Noah Segan’s “The Only Living Pickpocket in New York” is a wistful crime comedy and character study about Harry Lehman, an aging pickpocket struggling to support and care for his disabled wife as cashless payments and digital surveillance make his trade obsolete. After stealing from a young man tied to a New Jersey mob, Harry must recover a missing USB stick, setting off a one-day journey across New York. The caper also explores caregiving, working-class hardship and a city—and a gritty style of New York filmmaking—undergoing change. John Turturro’s tender, reflective performance anchors the film, with Steve Buscemi and other veteran actors in supporting roles. Shot across all five boroughs, the movie evokes affection for New York while acknowledging its economic divides and the passing of an era.
