Pittsburgh Rock Singer Donnie Iris Dies at 83
Pittsburgh rock musician Donnie Iris, born Dominic Ierace, died at 83 on Oct. 26 after battling bladder cancer. Known as “King Cool,” he announced his retirement in early October after health issues curtailed his touring; his final performance was Sept. 28 at the opening of Citizens Live at the Wylie. Iris first found success with the Jaggerz, co-writing and singing their hit “The Rapper,” and later became known for “Ah! Leah!” and “Love Is Like a Rock” with Donnie Iris and the Cruisers; he also briefly played with Wild Cherry. After cancer treatment, he returned to performing in 2024 before retiring. Pittsburgh leaders, fans and fellow musicians remembered him for his music, kindness and lasting place in the city’s identity.
