Met Gala Sets 2027 Theme After Galliano Cancellation

The Metropolitan Museum of Art on Nov. 5, 2026, set "extraORDINARY: Fashion and the Poetics of the Everyday" as its 2027 Costume Institute exhibition and Met Gala theme. It replaces "John Galliano: Horizons," canceled in August after criticism of Galliano's past antisemitic and racist comments. The gala is Monday, May 3, 2027; the exhibition runs May 9, 2027, through Jan. 9, 2028. Curator Andrew Bolton, speaking publicly to the New York Times for the first time since the decision, called the cancellation "Disappointing for everyone involved." He wanted a show that "had something new to say," on "ideas of value and consumption and resourcefulness," and said a brand-new show "was also a nice way of taking my mind off things." One secondary account says Galliano withdrew in late August; other coverage says Galliano and the museum said the project would not go forward. Bolton said the exhibition will hold 200 to 230 pieces, including Marc Jacobs's 1990s Perry Ellis collection, Brooke Shields's 1980 Calvin Klein jeans ad look, and Matthieu Blazy's trompe l'oeil leather jeans for Bottega Veneta, and will examine jeans, T-shirts, puffer coats, paper, plastic and metal. "I want visitors to leave looking differently at the clothes they arrived in," he said. The dress code is not yet announced.
