Lawsuit Halts Border Wall at Texas Wildlife Refuge

A segment of border wall remains incomplete along the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge in Alamo, Texas, after a lawsuit halted construction. The refuge’s more than 2,000 acres provide habitat for hundreds of thousands of migrating birds and butterflies, endangered cats and other wildlife, while also supporting recreation and Border Patrol operations. The Hidalgo County Irrigation District sued, alleging that contractors entered its property without permission and dumped substantial amounts of dirt into a nearby canal. A court order paused the work, amid broader legal and public opposition to President Donald Trump’s administration’s plans for a $46 billion wall across the U.S.-Mexico border, including construction affecting tribal and national park lands.
