Remains Found During Grand Canyon Flood Search

Human remains were discovered Monday near Crystal Rapid along the Colorado River in Grand Canyon National Park, about 10 miles downstream from Phantom Ranch. National Park Service rangers recovered the remains and transferred them to the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office, which is working to determine the person’s identity and cause and manner of death. The discovery came during ongoing efforts related to the Aug. 29 flash flood that killed two people and left hiker Timothy Allen Smith missing. Officials have not confirmed whether the remains belong to Smith, whose wife acknowledged the discovery and asked the public to be considerate. No further details were immediately available, and the remote inner-canyon location has complicated search and recovery operations.
