Large Cat Reports Prompt Warnings Across Three Regions

Authorities in Pocatello, Idaho, Hercules, California, and near Vereeniging, South Africa, warned residents about large cats reported in or near neighborhoods. Pocatello police searched for a mountain lion reported near the LDS temple, and Hercules police confirmed mountain lion sightings in a residential area near Hercules Avenue; near Redan, South Africa, an escaped lion remained unlocated as the search continued. Officials urged people not to approach, chase, or photograph the animals at close range, and to stay calm and back away slowly rather than run if they encounter one. Residents were also advised to keep children close, keep pets indoors or supervised, avoid isolated areas, and report sightings to authorities.
