Pepco Outage Hits State Department and World Bank in Foggy Bottom

A Pepco substation failure cut power to about 1,176 customers in Washington, D.C.’s Foggy Bottom and nearby downtown areas on Monday, including the State Department, World Bank, IMF and George Washington University. Emergency crews responded to reports of smoke coming from several manholes, while traffic signals were disrupted; officials have not established a link between the manhole incidents and the outage. GWU canceled or adjusted classes as buildings lost electricity. Pepco said the cause remained under investigation and there was no indication of foul play. Power was restored to affected customers by about 2 p.m.
