Erosion, Flooding Threaten North-Central Communities

Erosion and flooding are damaging homes, roads, farmland and livelihoods across vulnerable communities in Vietnam, Nigeria and England, prompting calls for stronger government action. In Vietnam’s Quang Ninh commune, more than 11 kilometers of the Nhat Le River’s banks are eroding, affecting more than 4,800 households and consuming agricultural land by an estimated 2 to 3 meters annually in some areas. In Nigeria’s Kogi, Nasarawa and Niger states, expanding gullies and floodwaters have displaced residents, cut off homes, damaged infrastructure and disrupted farming, despite some ongoing control projects. Residents in the affected Nigerian communities are seeking sustained interventions and preventive measures rather than temporary responses. In England, Bampton Parish Council warned that planned upstream development around Carterton and Brize Norton could increase flooding unless sewage and surface-water infrastructure is adequately designed and implemented.
