October short-interest data showed sharply divergent moves among four ETFs. Short interest in FlexShares iBoxx 3 Year Target Duration TIPS Index Fund (TDTT) fell 90.6% to 54,825 shares as of Oct. 15, while short positions rose 4,341% to 7,683 shares in WisdomTree High Income Laddered Municipal Fund (WTMY), equal to 3.8% of its shares. Simplify Currency Strategy ETF (FOXY) reported a 5,179.3% increase to 105,216 shares short, and SPDR DoubleLine Total Return Tactical ETF (TOTL) rose 4,380% to 284,343 shares. Despite the large percentage increases, short interest represented 1.3% of FOXY shares and 0.3% of TOTL shares; WTMY had the highest reported proportion among the funds.

Five Stocks’ Short Interest Jumps Up to 629%

Short interest increased in October across all five companies: Perimeter Medical Imaging AI rose the most, up 628.8%, followed by Arcadia Biosciences (286.3%), Regentis Biomaterials (223.8%), PIMCO Income Strategy Fund (139.3%) and Bumrungrad Hospital (118.3%). Arcadia had the highest reported share of stock sold short, at 14.9%.

Short interest rose sharply in October across five securities: Indonesian banks Bank Rakyat Indonesia and Bank Central Asia, PGIM’s Nasdaq-100 Buffer 12 ETF, Else Nutrition and China’s Sino-Ocean Group. The reported jumps were measured against very small September baselines, with estimated days to cover ranging from 0.2 days for Else Nutrition to 72.6 days for Bank Rakyat Indonesia; Sino-Ocean’s ratio could not be calculated because reported trading volume was zero.
