Ex-councilman, son among three indicted in loansharking case
Former Englishtown councilman John E. Alite, a former Gambino crime family enforcer, and two co-defendants—including his son—were indicted in New Jersey over an alleged loansharking and money-laundering scheme. Prosecutors allege Alite charged illegal interest and used threats of violence to collect money and property, with businesses allegedly helping advance the operation. Alite faces charges including extortion, usury, money laundering, and terroristic threats; his son and Stephen Locrotondo face related charges. Alite was arrested in June 2026, has remained jailed, and was removed from the council after missing meetings. The charges are allegations, and the defendants’ guilt has not been established.
