Extra Mile Day Expected in 500 Cities Nationwide
Communities across the country are marking Extra Mile Day on Nov. 1, with mayors in West Bend, Elyria, Boca Raton, Deming and Delaware recognizing volunteers and others whose everyday acts of service strengthen their communities. The observance encourages residents to help neighbors and support schools, community programs, seniors and animals, while honoring people who often work without seeking recognition. Founder Shawn Anderson created Extra Mile Day in 2009 after a cross-country bicycle journey that introduced him to people overcoming adversity and making a difference; the initiative has grown from 23 participating cities to more than 500 expected in 2026. Local leaders urged residents to participate through individual acts of kindness or community organizations.
