F1 Plans 15km-Shorter 2027 Races

Formula 1 will shorten most 2027 Grand Prix races from 305 kilometers to 290 kilometers, reducing distances by roughly two or three laps; Monaco’s 260-kilometer race will remain unchanged. The FIA and teams agreed to the move because increased fuel-flow rates will shift the power-unit balance toward internal-combustion power, requiring more fuel to cover the existing distance while fuel-tank capacity remains unchanged. The plan still requires approval from the FIA World Motor Sport Council, which is expected to be routine. Other proposed changes would remove the three-hour overall race window for events disrupted by rain or other stoppages while retaining a two-hour limit on actual racing, introduce a hard stop for racing activity, allow greater flexibility to extend interrupted practice sessions, and eliminate 2027 gearbox homologation to preserve supplier development freedom.
