Family Files Over $100M Suit Against SwimRVA
The family of 9-year-old King Overton has filed a wrongful-death lawsuit seeking $100.35 million from SwimRVA after he drowned during his first day at the organization’s Henrico County summer camp. The suit alleges staff knew King could not swim but allowed him into an unstructured free-swim period without a buddy or a dedicated watcher, while the sole lifeguard’s view was obstructed by an inflatable play structure. The family says it still has not been told how long King was underwater; preliminary reports indicate a bystander, rather than a lifeguard, pulled him from the pool. Separately, Virginia officials found the camp was operating without the required child-care license, and a special prosecutor took over the case after a conflict of interest was identified in the local prosecutor’s office. SwimRVA has said it is cooperating with authorities and expressed condolences to the family.
