Father, Son Killed on I-65 in Birmingham

Cornelius Leray Dixon, 56, and his son Jamari Tre'vionne Dixon, 22, were killed late Sunday night on northbound Interstate 65 in Birmingham. The Jefferson County Coroner's Office identified them. Family members said Jamari was heading home when his rear axle broke and a tire crossed into the median. He called his mother, who told Cornelius, who went to check. Samuel Dixon said Cornelius saw no cars coming, ran across, grabbed the tire, and tried to return. Jamari then called his mother in a panic that his father had been hit; the call cut off. Relatives found both men struck. Samuel Dixon said two 18-wheelers hit them and one truck ended about 100 feet from Jamari's body. Devonte Dixon said Cornelius was about two lanes out and almost back before a car clipped him and an 18-wheeler ended both, acting to spare other drivers from debris; he said Jamari stepped in to try to save their father. The driver involved stayed and called police. Birmingham police continue to investigate. Right-rated outlets led with the men walking on I-65 or hit by a vehicle.
