Inovio Shares Surge After FDA Approves First DNA Medicine for Rare Disease

The FDA granted accelerated approval to INOVIO Pharmaceuticals’ VOCERYQ, previously known as INO-3107, to reduce the frequency of surgery in adults with recurrent respiratory papillomatosis, a rare disease that causes recurring growths in the respiratory tract. The DNA medicine is approved for use with INOVIO’s CELLECTRA 5PSP delivery device, and the company says it is the first FDA-approved DNA medicine. Approval was based on a clinical outcome in which patients required no surgical excisions during the 12 months after treatment; continued approval may depend on a confirmatory study verifying the treatment’s clinical benefit. INOVIO expects the treatment to be available to order and ship in about 60 days, with a full commercial launch anticipated in the first quarter of 2027. The announcement sent INOVIO shares sharply higher in after-hours trading.
