Fillongley Villagers Knit Fake Speed Cameras
Residents of Fillongley, Warwickshire, have knitted fake speed cameras and dressed life-size mannequins as traffic officers to encourage drivers to slow down near a junction with a history of crashes. The village’s Knit and Natter group also placed knitted children and other road-safety displays along the roads, and locals say drivers have mistaken the figures for real enforcement and hit the brakes. Warwickshire County Council recorded 11 collisions at the junction over four years. The RAF mannequin, one of the group’s most prominent creations, was reportedly stolen; the campaign began amid frustration over the wait for a permanent safety fix, although the council has approved traffic lights for the crossroads.
