Amazon Debut Sterling Bond Sale Draws Over £12 Billion in Demand
Amazon launched its first sterling bond sale, seeking to raise about £4 billion through bonds maturing in three, six, 12 and 19 years, with reported demand exceeding £12 billion. The offering is intended to diversify Amazon’s funding as it invests heavily in artificial-intelligence infrastructure, including data centers, servers, networking equipment and cloud capacity. Amazon has also borrowed in U.S. dollars, euros, Swiss francs and Canadian dollars. Hyperscalers have issued more than $200 billion in debt so far this year, more than double their total for 2025, prompting concerns that heavy borrowing could crowd out other issuers and raise financing costs. The sale follows Alphabet’s £5.5 billion sterling offering in February, which included a rare 100-year bond, and comes after weaker demand for Amazon’s $25 billion July offering.
