China Posts 4.5% Q3 Growth, Annual Target Near
China's National Bureau of Statistics reported on Oct. 19, 2026 that third-quarter GDP grew 4.5% year over year, up from 4.3% in Q2 and above the 4.4% AFP poll forecast. First-nine-months growth reached 4.6%, inside Beijing's 4.5%–5% annual target. Quarter-on-quarter growth hit 1.2%, up from 0.9% in Q2. Exports of AI-related and high-tech goods drove the beat while domestic demand stayed weak. Guo Shan said "Exports seem to be the only outperformer" and that Beijing "will need to work faster to deploy the funds so as to hit the growth target." September retail sales grew 1.1%, the fastest since March. Fixed-asset investment fell 7.2% and property investment fell 20.6% over the first nine months. Wire accounts put September industrial output up 5.5%; Startup Fortune put it at 6.5%, up from 5.2% in August. IMF officials meeting in Bangkok with the World Bank cut the 2026 forecast to 4.5%, citing energy costs and "protracted uncertainty and structural headwinds," and called recent support measures "limited." Krishna Srinivasan said rebalancing toward domestic consumption has yet to materialise. After a 2025 trade surplus, October EU-China talks agreed on hybrid vehicle export limits.
