North Carolina Sends Inquiry Letters to 31 Gas Stations on Tax Savings

North Carolina’s Department of Justice sent inquiry letters to 31 gas stations after consumers complained that retailers may not be passing along savings from the state’s temporary 41-cent-per-gallon fuel tax suspension, which is in effect from Oct. 10 through Nov. 30. The letters request explanations of stations’ pricing and do not mean the businesses have been found to violate the law; more inquiries are expected. The attorney general’s office has received more than 600 complaints through its N.C. Fuel Check reporting program and is reviewing them. The state says retailers must pass the tax savings to customers, while pricing assessments may consider factors such as wholesale and transportation costs.
