Five Historic Sites Reveal Architectural, Cultural Treasures

Several historic churches across the Midwest and South stand out for their dramatic architecture and artistic interiors. In Covington, Kentucky, Mother of God Roman Catholic Church’s 200-foot twin towers, Italian Renaissance Revival design and Munich-made stained glass reflect the city’s German immigrant heritage; the parish also rebuilt its roof after a 1986 tornado. Savannah’s Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist features 214-foot Gothic Revival spires, extensive murals and stained glass, and a marble altar; a preservation project begun in 2024 is reinforcing the spires. Oklahoma City’s Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help offers visitors a free opportunity to appreciate its soaring interior, while St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Dubuque, Iowa, is notable for its collection of more than 100 Tiffany windows.
