Flames beat Maple Leafs 5-2, win fourth straight
Matvei Gridin scored twice, including a power-play goal early in the second period, as the Calgary Flames beat the Toronto Maple Leafs for their fourth straight win and completed a perfect homestand. Mikael Backlund also scored for Calgary, while Toronto’s goals came from Easton Cowan and William Nylander; Devin Cooley made 26 saves. The loss ended Toronto’s four-game winning streak, though Auston Matthews recorded his 800th NHL point with an assist on Nylander’s goal, reaching the milestone faster than any player in Maple Leafs history. Gridin celebrated his second goal with a griddy, drawing criticism from former player Justin Williams, while defenders of the celebration said the 20-year-old had earned the chance to show some swagger.
