Flint Council Approves Union Contracts Covering 230 Workers
Flint’s City Council voted 6-0 to give final approval to new labor agreements with AFSCME Local 1600 and the Flint Police Sergeants Union, covering 203 city employees and 30 sergeants. Union members had ratified the contracts, which city officials say provide improved pay and working conditions after years of financial strain and earlier employee concessions. Mayor Sheldon Neeley and council members said Flint’s balanced budgets have made the agreements possible, while union and police leaders emphasized the value of fair compensation for morale and retaining workers. Neeley also said the city plans to restore forestry and demolition operations, whose employees would be represented by Local 1600.
