Former Waverly Postmaster Sentenced for $16K USPS Fraud
Former Waverly, Iowa, postmaster Merri Ann Burgart was sentenced to five years of probation, including eight months of home confinement, after pleading guilty to wire fraud. She admitted to falsifying mileage claims in 2023 to obtain more than $16,000 in reimbursements from the U.S. Postal Service. Prosecutors also said she used a funnel bank account arranged through a former postmaster to conceal a conflict of interest while causing the Postal Service to pay more than $2,500 for lawn-mowing services. Burgart was ordered to pay $16,405 in restitution and a $4,000 fine.
