Four more charged in alleged Michigan campaign targeting Israel ties
Federal authorities have charged four additional people in an alleged intimidation campaign aimed at pressuring the University of Michigan to cut financial ties to Israel. Investigators cite threats and vandalism, including fake bloody corpses placed at a university regent’s home and anti-Israel graffiti at the home of then-president Santa Ono. Two of the new defendants were arrested and were expected to make their first court appearances, while two were not in custody. The charges follow a June indictment of eight activists, who have pleaded not guilty; defense attorneys have criticized the prosecution as criminalizing pro-Palestinian activism. The university says less than 0.1% of its endowment is invested in funds that might include companies in Israel.
