FRA orders environmental review of Amtrak Bridgeport yard after funding bid
The Federal Railroad Administration will conduct a public environmental assessment of Amtrak’s proposed 24-hour maintenance facility at Canal Street Yard in Chicago’s Bridgeport neighborhood, reversing its earlier decision to exempt the project from a more detailed review. The review was triggered after Amtrak sought federal funding for structural repairs to 17 viaducts supporting the yard, and is expected to include public input before the permitting process concludes by the end of 2026. Residents and local officials have raised concerns about pollution, noise, health effects and potential economic impacts, including the possibility of the White Sox leaving nearby Rate Field. Amtrak and developer Canal Edge support the expanded review, saying it will offer more transparency while helping explain the facility’s benefits for rail service, infrastructure and jobs; federal lawmakers also welcomed the opportunity for community input.
