French Bishops Condemn Violence Amid Nationwide Riots
French Catholic leaders urged an end to violence after nationwide riots and looting erupted during protests initially focused on the rising cost of living, amid weeks of student demonstrations. Bishops condemned attacks on police, injuries, looted shops, damaged public buildings and schools, and fires that severely damaged Limoges City Hall, while expressing solidarity with those harmed. Lyon’s archbishop called the violence a dead end, and an interreligious peace march planned by Christian, Muslim and Jewish leaders was postponed. Church leaders also called on citizens to reject division and work for peace.
