Judge Weighs Special Master to Review 20,000 Noncitizen Voter Claims

A federal judge is considering appointing an independent special master to review the Trump administration’s claim that roughly 20,000 noncitizens are on California’s voter rolls and assess whether ballots can be identified and separated. The judge voiced concern that acting on the list during voting could disenfranchise eligible voters, while the Justice Department has pressed California officials to cooperate and warned of possible prosecution; the inquiry is expected to proceed after the election, before state certification.
