FTC Orders Nine Firms to Disclose Personalized Pricing Data
The Federal Trade Commission has ordered nine companies—airlines Delta, United and JetBlue; gig-economy platforms Lyft, Uber, DoorDash and Instacart; and retailers Target and Walmart—to provide information for a study of personalized pricing. The agency is examining whether companies use personal data, loyalty-program participation or algorithmic analysis to vary prices for tickets, rides, deliveries and other goods, and whether data affects gig workers’ compensation. The inquiry is a non-enforcement study, but the Republican-led commission says a similar 2024 effort took a mistaken approach by focusing on intermediaries.
