Gambia Receives $2.5 Million for Victim Reparations
The Gambia says it received about $2.57 million from the forfeiture and sale of former President Yahya Jammeh’s mansion in Potomac, Maryland, and will use the money exclusively to compensate victims of his rule. The funds were deposited into the country’s Reparations Fund at the Central Bank, with the commission pledging responsible and transparent management. U.S. authorities alleged the property had been bought with proceeds of corruption and misappropriated Gambian public funds. Jammeh ruled from 1994 to 2017, and a commission of inquiry estimated that his forces killed between 240 and 250 people; he has also been accused of other serious abuses.
