Gates Foundation Launches 60-Partner AI Language Coalition

The Gates Foundation is forming a 60-member coalition with AI companies, corporations and philanthropies, including Anthropic, Google and the OpenAI Foundation, to expand AI tools and language datasets for communities whose languages are underrepresented in current systems. The effort aims to reach more than 3 billion people within five years by coordinating existing projects and improving AI’s potential applications in health, education and agriculture. Foundation CEO Mark Suzman said the work should continue alongside government regulation addressing risks such as cybersecurity and effects on children. The initiative follows the foundation’s commitment of $1 billion to AI-focused projects and warnings that inadequate language data can produce dangerous mistranslations in medical and other vital contexts.
