California Kayakers Report Separate Shark Encounters
Two California fishermen reported separate shark encounters while kayak fishing. Near Cambria, a suspected shark struck one man’s kayak about a mile offshore, throwing him into the water; after the damaged vessel began filling with water, he swam to shore uninjured, though officials said a shark’s involvement was not confirmed. Off Half Moon Bay, a great white swam alongside David Slavich’s kayak without attacking, leaving him shaken but unharmed. Slavich said he pulled his fishing gear from the water and braced for impact, and his wife urged him to get a larger, sturdier boat before going out again.
