German General Breuer Elected to Chair NATO Military Committee

Germany’s chief of defence, General Carsten Breuer, has been elected to chair NATO’s Military Committee, the alliance’s highest military authority, succeeding Italian Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone in July 2027 for a three-year term. He defeated Canada’s Chief of the Defence Staff Jennie Carignan in a closed vote by the 32 NATO chiefs of defence. Breuer will serve as NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte’s principal military adviser, coordinate military guidance and help convey allied commanders’ recommendations to political leaders. His appointment comes as NATO strengthens European deterrence against Russia and current President Donald Trump presses European allies to assume greater responsibility for the continent’s defence. Breuer, who has led Germany’s armed forces since 2023, was praised for his operational judgment, alliance experience and leadership of the Bundeswehr.
