Novo Nordisk launches Wegovy pill in Germany as Eli Lilly readies rival
Novo Nordisk is rolling out Wegovy’s oral tablet in Germany, the EU’s largest market, following EU approval, with pricing expected to match the injection’s €170–€280 range. The tablet, containing semaglutide, is approved for adults and positions Novo to broaden the obesity treatment franchise beyond injections, though daily dosing may affect adherence versus the weekly injection. Trial data from OASIS-4 show about 13.6% average weight loss with the tablet versus 19% for the injection, with the study duration shorter for the tablet; side effects include gastrointestinal issues and potential pancreatic inflammation. Market dynamics are tightening as Eli Lilly launches its competing pill Foundayo in the UK and seeks approvals in additional markets, threatening Novo’s dominant share in the oral obesity space, which was around 90% per Novo Nordisk estimates. Germany’s launch follows strong price and reimbursement considerations, as Novo seeks to leverage its first-mover advantage while navigating payer strategies and competition. Overall, the move expands Novo Nordisk’s footprint in Europe amid a competitive landscape for GLP-1 therapies and ongoing pricing pressures.
