Giants’ Vitello Ejected for MLB-High Seventh Time

San Francisco Giants manager Tony Vitello was ejected for a major-league-leading seventh time in the team’s season finale against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He argued after first-base umpire Marvin Hudson ruled that Mookie Betts checked his swing in the third inning, and plate umpire Ryan Blakney ejected him. The call did not hurt the Giants: pitcher Sam Hentges struck out Betts on the next pitch and then retired Freddie Freeman to end the inning. Vitello, a first-year manager with no professional playing or coaching experience before joining the Giants, has had a rocky adjustment with umpires; Giants broadcaster Mike Krukow has suggested some officials may be treating him unfairly because he did not work his way up through the minor leagues.
