GM Debuts New V-8 Engines for 2027 Pickups

General Motors unveiled a sixth-generation small-block V-8 family for the redesigned 2027 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500, replacing the outgoing 5.3- and 6.2-liter engines with 5.7-liter and 6.6-liter versions. The new engines produce 402 horsepower and 428 pound-feet of torque in the 5.7-liter and 481 horsepower and 501 pound-feet in the 6.6-liter, with GM emphasizing stronger towing, off-road capability, efficiency and durability after last year’s engine recalls. The lineup also includes an upgraded 2.7-liter TurboMax four-cylinder, a carryover diesel inline-six and a 10-speed automatic transmission for the four-cylinder model. Production of the new V-8s will begin in Flint, Michigan, with manufacturing expected to expand to GM’s plant in St. Catharines, Ontario. The gas-engine push reflects the central role of full-size pickups in GM’s profits and comes as demand for electric vehicles remains uneven and the current president’s administration pursues automotive deregulation.
