GM plans eyes-off highway driving debut in 2028 Escalade IQ

General Motors plans to introduce eyes-off highway driving beginning with the Cadillac Escalade IQ in 2028, then expand it to high-volume pickups and SUVs, though it has not set a rollout timeline for those models. The technology builds on Super Cruise and is expected to use AI alongside lidar, radar and cameras; GM is also adding AI to vehicle development and software as it seeks new revenue from digital features and to compete with faster-moving rivals. The company says AI could help cut vehicle development time roughly in half, while its broader plans include a centralized vehicle-computing architecture and expanded AI services through OnStar. The strategy faces questions about safety, liability and consumer demand for systems that hand control between the vehicle and driver, as well as the challenge of delivering on GM’s ambitious timelines.
