Greece proposes €15 billion EU 6G fund

Greece has proposed a European Spectrum Union that would pool part of future national 6G spectrum-auction proceeds to invest in strategic technology and digital infrastructure. The plan estimates an initial scale of €12 billion to €15 billion, but stresses that figure is a planning assumption, not an official forecast, and does not count possible revenue from selected 5G rights. Greece argues that closer coordination could address fragmentation among national spectrum systems; the proposal draws on its experience directing part of its 2020 auction proceeds to support businesses developing 5G applications. The idea could also help fund the EU’s proposed €2 trillion budget for 2028–2034, as governments weigh new spending on defense and competitiveness alongside existing farm and cohesion programs, and consider other potential revenue sources.
