Grocery Stores Open, Planned Across US, Canada

Several communities are adding grocery options as retailers fill vacant spaces or respond to concerns about access to food. In Madison, a city-backed full-service market has opened on the south side, an area at risk of becoming a food desert, offering fresh food and local products. In Shawnee, Fresh Market has opened in a shopping-center space that had been vacant since Dillons left in 2008, with Hispanic groceries, prepared meals, a bakery and other specialty offerings. Edmonton’s Keswick neighborhood is slated to get a No Frills, though the company says it expects to confirm the opening timeline in 2027. In the Greater Toronto Area, Longo’s is preparing to open a King City store, while T&T and Food Basics have recently opened additional locations; a Seattle report also describes a new grocery opening amid neighborhood store closures.
