Wabanaki Groups Seek Return of Removed Acadia Park Markers
Acadia National Park removed about 30 interpretive markers under a Trump administration effort to eliminate materials considered disparaging to American history. Among them was a Cadillac Mountain sign describing the mountain’s sacred importance to the Wabanaki people, whose communities have longstanding ties to the region. Wabanaki representatives say removing signs developed with their input erases Native language and history and damages trust built through years of collaboration. The dispute has renewed debate over whose stories national parks should tell.
