Groups Seek Volunteers for Winter Warming Shelters
Community groups are preparing winter warming services for people experiencing homelessness and seeking ways to expand access. The Matthew 25 Alliance is recruiting volunteers to staff overnight warming centers in Georgia’s White and Habersham counties, while Salem’s community action agency is seeking volunteers to keep a church-based warming shelter open during freezing weather. In Portland, a letter writer proposed temporarily using the Maine Irish Heritage Center as a warming shelter, potentially as part of a deal to restore the building’s nonprofit status. A separate Cambridge initiative also aims to help unhoused residents through a winter warming drive.
