Attack in Eastern Guatemala Kills Lawmaker and Three Officers
Guatemalan lawmaker Julio César Portillo Paz and three National Civil Police officers were killed in an armed attack in Río Hondo, in the eastern department of Zacapa. Portillo was seriously wounded and died after being taken to a hospital; President Bernardo Arévalo said the officers were killed in the line of duty and ordered security forces to assist prosecutors. Authorities have not identified suspects or disclosed a motive. The attack occurred in a region known for drug trafficking, but officials have not established a connection to the recent killing of former anti-corruption prosecutor Juan Francisco Solórzano Foppa.
