Guinea-Bissau Military Bars Ex-President Embaló’s Return
Guinea-Bissau’s military authorities have barred ousted President Umaro Sissoco Embaló from returning from exile, saying security conditions are inadequate to ensure public order and stability. Embaló had announced plans to return on Oct. 4 and run in the Dec. 6 presidential election; the military takeover that removed him had halted the previous electoral process. The junta says the December vote is intended to restore civilian rule, but it has maintained restrictions on political demonstrations and gatherings. Residents of the capital voiced mixed reactions: some said Embaló should be allowed to return and let voters decide, while others cited the authorities’ stated inability to guarantee his safety. The dispute adds to political uncertainty as the country prepares for elections.
