Guterres Calls Accountability for Sudan War Arms Suppliers

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2026, told reporters that countries providing weapons to Sudan’s warring parties should be held accountable when those weapons are used massively to attack civilians. He spoke ahead of the annual General Assembly gathering of world leaders in New York. Guterres said what is happening in Sudan is absolutely horrible, the humanitarian situation is devastating, and the level of suffering of the Sudanese people is intolerable. He also said the conflict is fuelled by a number of countries from the outside. Sudan’s war began in April 2023 following a power struggle between the military and the Rapid Support Forces and has displaced more than 14 million people. A U.N. fact-finding mission said earlier this month that foreign weapons, military technology, fighters and logistical networks are helping sustain the conflict and expanding the parties’ ability to strike distant civilian areas with drones.
